SOUTHEAST NASHVILLE RECOVERY HOSTS RECYCLING FOR COMMUNITY
Do you have electronics equipment damaged in the floods that you need to get rid of? Are you dealing with scrap metal wastes on your property? Bring it all to Hickory Hollow Mall on August 6 or 7 for recycling!

Southeast Nashville Recovery is partnering with Scott Recycling and Hickory Hollow Mall to take your e-waste and scrap metal items for proper disposal. There will be a drop-off location in the Southeast portion of the Hickory Hollow parking lot (located on Bell Rd. in Antioch) staffed by local volunteers to take your items.

Items accepted include: laptop and desktop computers, crt & lcd monitors, hard drives, modems, plug & play devices, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, commercial telephone equip, power back ups, power transformers, wires, cables, vcrs/dvd players, circuit boards, video game systems, radios, stereos, microwave ovens, small household appliances, industrial scrap, metal office furniture, chain link fencing, and small lots of scrap metal.

The recycling drop-off location at Hickory Hollow will be open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 6, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 7.

The deadline for applying for FEMA and SBA Loan assistance is coming up quickly on July 6, and many of our neighbors do not realize what they have to lose by failing to complete ALL the paperwork. In order to receive the maximum amount of money available from FEMA, applicants MUST complete the SBA Loan application, regardless of whether they think the are eligible OR if they don’t want to take out a loan. Failure to do so will mean that hundreds of our neighbors are not getting the full amount of federal assistance available to them for rebuilding.

We would like for anybody who has a cell phone and is willing to make some calls to come the Christ Church at 10 a.m. We will provide a short training to help you understand the 10 reasons why people resist completing the application, and then provide phone lists of area residents for you to call and encourage their doing the paperwork.

Time is growing short and we need as many folks as possible to help us knock this out quickly.

The character of a city…

It’s been six weeks since the floods overwhelmed our neighbors, and while it may be hard to believe we still have clean-out project needs in Nashville. According to the TN Recovery Coordination Center, there are still over 100 projects that have not yet been dealt with, including mucking and gutting, insulation removal, and mold treatment. And that is even thinking about the rebuilding to come.

SO WE STILL NEED YOU!!! The debris piles may have gone away, but we need your help in cleaning up and rebuilding. There is a link to a volunteer registration form at the top for individual volunteers, and a group information tab for those of you bringing a group. We continue to have to tell folks in need that we can’t send them anyone because we don’t have enough volunteers, and that drives us crazy, so PLEASE consider giving a day and helping your neighbor start getting their life back together.

We also REALLY need to expand our pool of licensed electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, and contractors who are willing to volunteer or give us a REALLY good price for inspection, repair and replacement work. If you have those skills and licenses and are willing to help, e-mail me at jay@jvoorhees.net.

I tweeted earlier today that the character of a city is found not in how it responds in the first week, but rather in what it is doing in week 6 or 7. Come on and help us define Nashville as a place that is into helping our neighbors for the long haul. We can’t do it without you.

A Process for Reconstruction

Are things starting to dry out? Have you treated for bacteria and mold and the studs are getting to below 20% in moisture content (you really need a meter to know!)? Well then it may be time to start rebuilding. Here is a basic outline of how the process works in Nashville:

Home Owner or Contractor pulls building permit
Arrange for a licensed electrician to do the needed repairs.
1. Minimum needed is the change of outlets that were submersed by water.
Arrange for licensed HVAC and Plumbing contractors if repairs are needed.
Once rough in inspections have been completed for electrical, HVAC and plumbing:
1. Ensure all penetrations in the floor and wall plates have been fire caulked.
2. Seal up under tub drain pipe.
3. Fix or make any framing changes.
Call in for framing inspection
Insulate
Install sheetrock or paneling
Tape & texture sheetrock (If funds are available, we recommend that this be down by a professional finisher.)
Prime new sheetrock.
Install finish floors
Install kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets
Install base board and window trim
Paint walls (This can be done before item 10, but if you do it at that point make sure you use flat paint for touch ups.)
Call contractors in for trim out on electrical, HVAC and plumbing.
Once final inspections have been completed for item #14 call in for final inspection.

It’s the Tuesday after a great three-day Memorial Day weekend, and I am looking at a pile of folders representing homes where we still have needs to meet. If your neighborhood is like mine, you have seen numerous vendors placing
signs along public right-of-way and on telephone poles. After members of the
Bellevue Beautification Committee finished a “sign sweep” last week, I
became curious about how many of these companies/vendors (advertising dry
wall, mold removal, cheap signs, construction services, carpeting, flooring,
mattresses, etc) were actually operating legally in Davidson County.

With the cooperation of County Clerk John Arriola, we discovered that only 6
of the 39 companies presently hold a valid business tax (although some may
operate legally if they do less than $50,000 business in Davidson County).
Five had previously held licenses but are now operating on expired licenses
- as far as we can tell, the rest have no license.

This is lost revenue for our county that Clerk Arriola is now attempting to
recover.

If you are in a position to provide company names and phone numbers, I have
been assured by Mr. Arriola that he and his staff will aggressively work to
rectify this problem.

Debris Removal Info

It’s been reported in several places that curbside debris removal will end tomorrow, June 1, even though we continue with clean-outs in many places. After several conversations with Public Works, it appears that Metro trucks will continue to run, but outside contractor trucks will be leaving, significantly reducing the amount that can be picked up. Public Works has monitors out checking on debris levels and will continue to run pickups to those places where they know debris exists, but would like to know if there are other places where debris is located that they need to pickup. If you are removing debris from a house, make sure it is placed as close to the curb as possible and then e-mail Stacy at Public Works (Stacy.mccoy@nashville.gov) to report the location of that debris so that they can make arrangements for pickup. Public Works requests that all get debris to the curbside as quickly as possible.
